Westmeath enjoyed a brilliant 3-15 to 0-11 Lidl Ladies National Football League Division 2 Final replay win over Cavan at St Brendan’s Park, Birr.

Having lost two deciders at this level in 2014 and 2016, Westmeath, inspired by Leona Archibold who registered 1-6, claimed an excellent victory.

The win means that the Midlanders will compete in the top flight next year, which is a significant achievement, highlighting the work being carried out throughout the county.

Archibold’s 19th-minute goal set Westmeath on the way with Cavan unable to cope with a lively attack. Laura Brennan added a second major for Westmeath, who went in at the interval holding a commanding 2-11 to 0-4 lead.

In the 46th minute Ciara Blundell pounced to net Westmeath’s third goal sealing the deal as Cavan struggled.
