Calls for traffic calming measures on N61 route ignored - Murphy

Fianna Fáil Deputy for Roscommon-Galway, Eugene Murphy, has hit out at the lack of action by the Transport Infrastructure Ireland on introducing traffic calming measures along specific locations on the N61 Roscommon to Athlone route.

Deputy Murphy said that there were a number of dangerous locations and particularly busy junctions along the N61 from Roscommon Town to Athlone, which urgently required traffic calming measures in a bid to make the route safer for motorists and residents in the area.

“There are a number of locations along the N61 route which are particularly dangerous and need more traffic calming measures including junctions at the Hodson Bay, St Brigid’s, Kiltoom and the turnoff for Kilteevan just past Knockcroghery village,” he said.

“This is a very busy national route with a considerable amount of traffic and additional signposting and traffic calming measures are needed at a number of locations, but the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII ) has ignored the calls by Roscommon County Council, local TDs, councillors, and community groups to address this issue.”

Deputy Murphy said there is an onus on the TII to engage with the local authority to address these very real concerns as there are a number of schools, cemeteries, churches, football pitches, and other public amenities which are affected.

“Traffic calming measures and additional signposting need to be urgently introduced at a number of locations along this route to make the N61 stretch from Roscommon to Athlone as safe as possible for all road users,” Deputy Murphy concluded.
