Southern Gaels seize Throne of GAAmes

You’ve heard of Game of Thrones, but have you ever heard of the Throne of GAAmes? Local hurling club Southern Gaels have acquired a novel item for their participation in this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade - the Throne of GAAmes.

The brainchild of Danish sculptor Paul Berg, this impressive piece was created for his local club, Whitegate GAA in East Clare, out of more than 150 hurleys.

Inspired by the Legends theme for this year’s Athlone parade, Southern Gaels staged an early morning raid into the Banner county last Saturday and returned victorious with the prized possession, which will take pride of place when the club hurlers march through Athlone tomorrow.

The Throne of GAAmes will be on display throughout the morning at the GAA club on the Ballymahon Road and everyone, young and old, is invited to call in and try it out for size!
