Loman’s aim for third county title in four years

Sunday's Westmeath SFC Final at Cusack Park between St Loman's, Mullingar and Tyrrellspass promises to be an interesting affair.

St Loman's, who are hoping to secure a third title in four years, face an improving Tyrrellspass outfit. Though Tyrrellspass's last county success was in 2007 they have made steady progress throughout this campaign and will be eager to examine Loman's.

Luke Dempsey's team continue to be spearheaded by inter-county stars John Heslin and Paul Sharry, while Shane Dempsey and Ken Casey are influential forwards.

Tyrrellspass, though, have the potential to cause Loman's problems in what is a repeat of the 2013 final. On that occasion Loman's prevailed on a 1-16 to 0-15 scoreline to end a 40-year wait for a Westmeath championship. That was a particularly special success for Loman's, who have worked hard during the past few decades in the underage ranks.

At the semi-final stage Loman's were too strong for Killucan, who had been so impressive in the group stages. Killucan were quietly confident about reaching the Westmeath showpiece, but Loman's emerged 2-14 to 0-12 victors.

Shane Dempsey's opportunistic goal early in the second half was a vital score. Killucan battled until the end, but Heslin adding the insurance goal for Loman's, who will want to be similarly resourceful against Tyrrellspass.

Athlone's clash with Tyrrellspass at the penultimate stage was a lively encounter as the 2015 Intermediate champions were eventually beaten. Tyrrellspass, prompted by David Glennon, had enough power to overcome Athlone with Val Sizychas' goal the decisive score.

Loman's and Tyrrellspass both advanced from a highly competitive Group B.
