Seamus Meade fundraising appeal gathers steam

The fundraising committee for local man Seamus Meade’s treatment for MND have been busy planning a number of events to raise funds for him to go abroad for treatment.

The first event was a coffee morning in the Shannon Craft and Coffee Dock which was held on July 22 and was a great success, raising in the region of €5,000.

The committee have been granted a Garda permit to hold a church gate collection at all churches on Saturday and Sunday, August 20 and 21 and your support would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to collect at one of the masses contact any of the committee.

The next event is a family fun day and indoor market taking place on Saturday, August 27, from 11am to 5pm at St Kieran’s Community Centre in Tormey Villas, Athlone. Athlone Pipe Band will start off the day at 11am. The indoor market will have a wide variety of items for sale including collectables, bric-a-brac, books, DVDs, toys, household items, plants, and cakes.

There will also be hand and foot massages, a Viking stand where children can dress up as Vikings, face painting, Bozo the clown, a penalty shoot-out for seven to 12-year-olds, fancy dress for children, a bouncing castle, pubs tug-of-war competition, Tonnta characters, and a fire safety demonstration from 2pm to 4pm by the Fire Service.

If you have good quality items you would like to donate to be sold at the indoor market or auctioned at a later date, or if you would like to take a table for the day for a fee of €20 which will go towards the fund, contact any of the committee members. This event will be followed by a musical evening in the Coosan Tavern.

Other fundraising events being organised include a traditional music night, a table quiz, an auction, and a sponsored tandem paraglide which will be done by Seamus. Volunteers are needed to go from door to door to fundraise for this event. Sponsorship cards are available from the Shannon Crafts and Coffee Dock.

An art exhibition and sale is being organised for early September. Donations of paintings or artwork for this sale would be much appreciated. To arrange drop-off for these call Rosemary on (086 ) 3934603 or Rose on (085 ) 1883418.

Pilates classes with Olive Keyes will also be available in Athlone Sports Centre on a date yet to be decided in September. Tickets will be available for a donation of anything over €10 each. Early booking is advisable as places will be limited. Contact Carmel to reserve a place.
