New photography exhibition to focus on 1980s Roscommon

Roscommon Arts Centre is delighted to announce that an exhibition of photographic prints by world-renowned British photographer Martin Parr, entitled So Near and So Far – Roscommon in the 1980s, will be unveiled in the arts centre gallery this Thursday, August 11.

The images selected present a typically wry Parr-eque view of Roscommon and the wider region. Known for projects that take an intimate and satirical look at aspects of modern life, So Near and So Far looks at the effects of wealth and the Americanisation of the West of Ireland.

Martin Parr was born in Epsom, Surrey, UK, in 1952. When he was a boy, his budding interest in the medium of photography was encouraged by his grandfather George Parr, himself a keen amateur photographer. Martin Parr studied photography at Manchester Polytechnic from 1970 to 1973. Since that time, Martin has worked on numerous photographic projects. He has developed an international reputation for his innovative imagery, his oblique approach to social documentary, and his input to photographic culture within the UK and abroad. He has published over 90 books of his own work and edited another 30.

This is an wonderful opportunity for photography, art, and history lovers to witness and appreciate an exhibition that allows the audience to peer closely into our culture.

The exhibition preview takes place at 6pm on August 11, and the public are welcome to attend, though places are limited. Martin Parr will talk about his long career in photography at this special event.

The exhibition continues until October 11. The visual art programme is curated by curator in residence, Linda Shevlin.
