National body advises homeowners only to use licensed alarm installers

The National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI ) is advising homeowners only to use certified security system installers when getting an alarm or CCTV fitted in their property.

The warning comes after an unlicensed security systems installer was convicted at Naas District Court on Monday, July 4, under Section 37 of the Private Security Authority Act.

The latest prosecution arises from an extensive investigation by the PSA’s inspector into the installation of intruder alarm and CCTV systems by unlicensed operators.

Chief executive of the NSAI, Maurice Buckley, said it is vital homeowners and businesses check the Private Security Authority’s register and only use licensed security system installers. “It is illegal to operate a security systems service without a licence,” he said. “Therefore, it is crucial householders realise that using an unlicensed installer may invalidate their insurance cover.

“As an accredited certification body, NSAI audits and certifies installer companies. This certification is a necessary prerequisite for them to obtain their licence from the Private Security Authority. We‘re encouraging anyone thinking of getting an alarm or CCTV installed in their home to do their research and check the register of licensed traders before buying. You should also make sure you receive a completion certificate once the device is installed.”

The Private Security Authority is the statutory body with responsibility for licensing and regulating the private security industry in Ireland. The authority provides a register of all licensed contractors.

Householders should check the register on the PSA website www.psa.gov.ie, before engaging an intruder alarm, CCTV or access control contractor to install or service their system. For further information visit www.NSAI.ie
