New secondary school in Athlone christened Coláiste Chiaráin

The committee in charge of supervising the amalgamation of St Joseph’s and St Aloysius secondary schools has announced that the new school will be named Coláiste Chiaráin.

The committee, comprising representatives from trustees, boards of managements, teachers, parents, and members of the local community, came to the decision after extensive consultations with parents and students associated with both schools. The establishment of Coláiste Chiaráin at Summerhill will bring state-of-the-art educational facilities to a proposed 800 students in Athlone. It will be the only secondary school west of the Shannon in the Athlone area.

The new school will include a football training pitch and a 600 sq m modern gymnasium with ancillary facilities such as changing rooms, the first of its kind in the West Athlone area. Students enrolling for the 2016/2017 school year can also expect to benefit from an enhanced curriculum and educational programmes. Plans also include an application for an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD ) Unit. Coláiste Chiaráin will open its doors to students in September, 2017.
