O’Brien will not contest upcoming General Election

Local Independent Councillor Michael O’Brien has this week confirmed that he will not be contesting the forthcoming General Election.

O’Brien met with his campaign team last week and they made the decision that he would not to contest this General Election. Instead it was decided that the councillor should concentrate on his work in the local community for now and continue working hard for his district and county. O’Brien says he is more than happy to concentrate on county politics for the time being.

“I take my position as a county councillor very seriously and have been working very hard since my election last year to deliver as much as I can for the people in the Athlone Municipal District,” he says. “It’s a very exciting time locally, there’s a lot happening, and I’m delighted to be involved in bringing some great projects and local improvements to the district.”

The councillor did express his determination to contest a general election in the future: “I would like to be in a position to contest a general election in the future, but for now, I want to concentrate on my work locally,” he says. “For this election, I will be supporting my Independent colleague Councillor Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran. I’ve worked closely with Cllr Moran since my election last year in working hard for the people, towns, and villages in the district.

“He has a strong work ethic and has years of experience. I think he deserves a chance to represent us on the national stage, so I would encourage everyone to get behind him in electing him to Dail Eireann.”
