A powerful portrait of survivors of the Kennedy dream

A New York City bar on Valentine’s Day 1974 brings together a remarkable cast of characters as Robert Patrick’s award-winning play Kennedy’s Children comes to the Mullingar Arts Centre on November 22. This will mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F Kennedy.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 35th president of the United States, was one of the most charismatic figures of the 20th century. His vision and energy inspired the American people to put a man on the moon, to improve the world with the Peace Corps, and to fight the injustices of racial prejudice.

On one November day in 1963 an assassin’s bullet shattered the dreams and aspirations of a nation.

Set in a Lower East Side bar in New York on Valentine’s Day in the mid 70s, five disparate characters, survivors of the promise of the Kennedy years, drink alone.

Wanda is a teacher who found her hero - only after he was gone. Rona had a hundred heroes - and they all died, failed, were killed, disappeared, sold out.

Mark, a veteran of Vietnam made his hero both God and the Devil - and killed him.

Sparger is an off-Broadway’ actor - a homosexual who was close to his hero and watched him decay.

Carla, is an aspiring actress, who like her heroine, Marilyn Monroe, stood up before the world - and was destroyed.

When the dream of the promise of the Kennedy years turns into a nightmare, what becomes of... Kennedy’s children?

Kennedy’s Children comes to the Mullingar Arts Centre on November 22. Tickets are €17/€14 and can be purchased from the Mullingar Art Centre’s box office by calling (044 ) 9347777.
