Leisure projects still trump commercial in Athlone

The crunch-enforced slowdown of capital projects around Athlone continues apace according to the public files at Athlone Town Council’s planning department this week.

In fact, the only major work in the pipelines at the moment seems to be the off-season improvements of facilities in the leisure and tourism sector.

Lough Ree and its environs will be that bit more accommodating for visitors next summer with the developments planned for the lakeside.

Dorothy English has been given permission to install three jetties and a slipway at the Wineport Lodge in Glasson, whereas Kenneth Concannon has just submitted an application for a similar project and is hoping to build a single jetty at Hillquarter, Coosan.

Further along in the process, Glasson Golf and Country Club has been asked by the council to submit further information concerning its plans for an extended bar, restaurant and kitchen at its clubhouse, the protected Killinure House.

A little bit further along the lakeshore, Tom and Nollaig O’Neill have two applications pending on their eco guesthouse on Coosan Point Road.

Recently submitted is their plan to add 10 additional skylights to the property and they have also been asked to give more information to the planning department in relation to the 102 sqm bar and additional toilets planned for the site.

The largest commercial green light given was to Sheever Developments to finish Phase 2 of Moate Business Park which is presently only accessible from the Clara Road.

This will include an internal roundabout and eight site entrances, paths, verges and a new junction with the main Kilbeggan road, the old N6.

At the other end of the town, Denis O’Connell and Michael Kenny have been asked for extra details concerning their plans for a small business park at Fearmore on the Athlone Road. Plans include two offices, two light industrial units, one manufacturing unit, one warehouse, a car park and associated works.

The only other commercial project of note is the Walsh Mushrooms Ltd project to partially demolish and then extend a warehouse at its premises in the Blyry industrial estate in Athlone.
