John Giles announces charity walk date for Athlone

One of Ireland’s most famous footballers and TV pundits was in Athlone this week to launch a charity walk in aid of community football.

John Giles, the former Manchester United, Leeds United, and Ireland player was in the Shamrock Lodge on Wednesday for the launch of his foundation’s Walk of Dreams, which will take place on Sunday March 27 in Athlone at 3pm.

“The Walk of Dreams will bring together many of the Midlands’ football clubs to walk in solidarity as the football family, whilst raising funds both for the club and the John Giles Foundation to continue the growth of football in the Midlands,” said the irascible pundit.

The John Giles Foundation is in contact with all midlands football clubs and will shortly send out brochures and sponsorship cards. Each club will appoint a Walk of Dreams captain to manage their clubs fundraising and walk on the day. Each club will walk under their own clubs banner and should try to get not just the players and coaches involved but as many people as possible from their town or village to walk with them on the day and show how important their club is to the community.

Half of the funds raised will be retained by the football club themselves, while the other half shall go to the foundation for community football projects. Clubs, schools, or community groups can apply for funding to implement or improve football based community projects.
