Athlone IT student in running to win €1,000 and dream job placement

An Athlone IT student is in the running to win €1,000, in addition to getting a taste of her dream job, thanks to the Best in Show competition, organised by The Digital Hub.

Edel Flynn, who has just completed her finals in the BA (Hons ) in Visual Communications course at Athlone Institute of Technology, has been announced as a category winner in Best in Show 2010, a competition for digital media students.

Earlier this year, students from all over Ireland were invited to submit examples of their work to The Digital Hub for assessment by a team of industry experts. Winning entries have now been chosen in five categories: interior design; graphic design; animation; film and video production; and multimedia. All category winners get a two-week work placement in a high profile company of relevance to their field. In addition, the five category winners go forward for an online public vote, and the winner of that will receive a prize of €1,000.

Ms Flynn is the overall winner in the graphic design category in Best in Show. Her success means she can now avail of a work placement with Red Dog, one of Ireland’s leading graphic design companies.

Her winning Best in Show entry is a design for a book aimed at making the works of William Shakespeare more accessible to a contemporary urban audience. Throughout the book design, illustration and photography are used to present a modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s work.

Ms Flynn uses true-life stories and statistics to help readers relate to Shakespeare’s plays, and she has re-set his work in Dublin city to help readers identify more strongly with the setting and themes covered in the plays.

Commenting on her project, Mary Doherty, one of the founders of Red Dog, said: “[Edel’s work is] quirky, sophisticated, and her typography looks really strong, which is essential for graphic design”.

Ms Flynn is originally from Clonsilla in West Dublin. Having completed her final exams at Athlone IT, she is now looking forward to her work placement, and is hoping she might also be the lucky winner of the Best in Show online public vote.

An event to mark the category winners’ achievements and announce the commencement of the online public vote will take place in the Digital Exchange, Crane Street, The Digital Hub, Dublin 8 at 11am next Tuesday, June 15.

Members of the public wishing to vote for their favourite Best in Show entry can log on to www.thedigitalhubexhibit.com and cast their vote until noon on Monday, June 21.
