Enjoy a White Christmas with Athlone Film Club

Brighten up your winter evening on Tuesday December 15 at 8pm in the Dean Crowe Theatre with Athlone Film’s Clubs final film of the season, the timeless classic White Christmas, one of the best loved Christmas movies ever made.

The snow, the songs, the music can’t fail in getting you into seasonal spirits and of course you have the winning formula of a magical score from the darling of musical cinema Irving Berlin plus the charismatic acting of Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, and Rosemary Clooney.

White Christmas spins the romantically humorous tale of two army friends, played by Crosby and Kaye, who become a famous musical comedy team after the war and eventually produce their own Broadway hits. They become involved with a sister act – the Misses Clooney and Vera-Ellen – and the quartet proceed to Vermont to spend a white Christmas.

Crosby and Kaye discover the inn at which they are staying is owned by General Waverly (Dean Jagger ), their former commanding officer who is now retired. Waverly’s investment is in danger owing to the unseasonably warm weather and lack of snow. Winter sports enthusiasts are staying away.

To promote business over the Yuletide holidays, the boys bring their new show to the inn for a pre-Broadway warm-up and advantage is also taken of the occasion to stage a re-union of the general’s war-time division. Romantic complications ensue, but all ends happily on Christmas Eve and the film fades out in a flurry of snowflakes.

Upon this lighthearted framework producer Dolan; director Curtiz; writers Norman Krasna, Norman Panama, and Mel Frank; and composer Berlin have spun a spectacular musical motion picture.

It’s a love story and Christmas fable with wit, exuberance, and some show stopping hits. So what a perfect way to warm a winter’s evening and embrace the magic of Christmas. To help you get into the Christmas mood there will be complimentary wine and mince pies in the Dean Crowe Theatre bar at 7.30pm

It might be rain outside but you can dream of a white Christmas if you come along on Tuesday December 15 to the Dean Crowe Theatre.
